01

Safe mealtimes

Little Leaps manages meals and snacks with close supervision and allergy awareness. A Paediatric First Aid trained staff member is present at all times during meals and snacks, and staff sit facing children so they can observe for signs of choking or allergic reactions.

Children are seated safely in highchairs or low chairs during meals. Distractions such as toys, running and screens are minimised, and children are closely supervised to prevent food swapping or sharing.

02

Choking prevention and allergies

Detailed allergy, intolerance, medical dietary, cultural and religious food information is gathered before a child starts. For children with known allergies, an allergy action plan is created with parents and relevant healthcare professionals and reviewed as needed.

Food is prepared and served in ways that reduce choking risks. Whole grapes, cherry tomatoes and similar foods are quartered, food textures are adapted by age and stage, and tough or sticky foods are avoided for younger children.

Where a child has known allergies or specific dietary requirements, a named allergy lead or nominated checker helps make sure food is safe before it is served.

03

Incidents and parent communication

Any choking incident or allergic reaction is responded to immediately by trained staff, documented in the incident log and reported to parents or carers as soon as possible. Near misses are reviewed to identify patterns and prevent recurrence.

Parents are informed about menus, meal plans, allergy procedures and any changes that affect their child's food or dietary management.
