Overview of the Five Focus Areas

This Early Development Plan is structured around five key themes that support child development while aligning with the seven areas of learning in the EYFS.
1. Me (Personal Development)

EYFS Links: Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED), Physical Development

Intent:
To support children in developing a strong sense of self, confidence, independence, and emotional awareness.

Implementation:

  • Key person approach to build secure attachments
  • Daily routines promoting independence (self-care, tidying, choosing activities)
  • Activities exploring identity (family photos, mirrors, “All About Me” books)
  • Naming and discussing emotions through stories and play

Impact:
Children feel safe, valued, and confident to explore. They begin to regulate emotions and develop independence.

2. Us (Relationships & Community)

EYFS Links: PSED, Understanding the World

Intent:
To help children understand relationships, respect others, and develop a sense of belonging within their community.

Implementation:

  • Group activities encouraging sharing and turn-taking
  • Celebrating cultural events and family backgrounds
  • Role-play and collaborative play opportunities
  • Modelling positive behaviour and language

Impact:
Children form positive relationships, show empathy, and understand similarities and differences.

3. Challenge (Thinking & Problem Solving)

EYFS Links: Mathematics, Understanding the World

Intent:
To develop curiosity, resilience, and problem-solving skills through engaging and appropriately challenging experiences.

Implementation:

  • Open-ended resources (blocks, puzzles, loose parts)
  • Adult scaffolding to extend thinking (“What happens if…?”)
  • Encouraging trial and error and persistence
  • Outdoor exploration and investigation

Impact:
Children become active learners who think critically, solve problems, and persist when faced with difficulty.

4. Imagination (Creativity & Expression)

EYFS Links: Expressive Arts and Design, Literacy, Maths

Intent:
To nurture creativity, imagination, and self-expression through a variety of media and experiences.

Implementation:

  • Access to creative resources (paint, music, role-play props)
  • Storytelling, singing, and movement activities
  • Child-led imaginative play
  • Opportunities to explore textures, sounds, and materials

Impact:
Children confidently express ideas and emotions, using creativity to explore their world.

5. Communication (Language & Literacy)

EYFS Links: Communication and Language, Literacy

Intent:
To support the development of speaking, listening, understanding, and early literacy skills.

Implementation:

  • Language-rich environment with songs, rhymes, and stories
  • High-quality adult-child interactions
  • Daily story sessions and book access
  • Encouraging conversation during play
  • Support for early mark-making and writing

Impact:
Children develop strong communication skills, a love of stories, and the foundations for reading and writing.
